Christopher Mason Haile letter, 1838 Feb. 18.

The letter is a four-page unstamped folio from Christopher Mason Haile to M.S. Culbertson dated February 18, 1838. Both Haile and Culbertson were cadets at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. At the time he wrote the letter Haile was visiting Paul Octave Hebert at Bayou Goula Plantation near Plaquemine, La. Hebert was a noted military and political leader and the father of another cadet and friend of Haile's and Culbertson's. Haile discusses his time at the plantation including his interactions with Hebert's family and servant staff. He also writes about visiting Dunboyne Plantation near Iberville, La. Haile would later become a noted war correspondent and humorist.
